Velier - pioneers of rare rum
Velier worlds rarest rums
When it comes to the world of fine spirits, few names carry the weight and respect of Velier. Founded in Genoa in 1947 as a small-scale wine and spirits import company, Velier has since transformed into a global authority on rare rum, single malts and natural wines.
That transformation is largely the work of one man: Luca Gargano.
From tradition to revolution
For decades, Velier operated as a conventional importer. But in 1983, Luca Gargano, then a rising star in Italy’s spirits industry, took over a stake in the company. What followed was a radical shift in direction. Rather than simply import what was readily available, Gargano set out to discover and distribute the most authentic, artisanal and exceptional spirits the world had to offer.
From 1985 onward, Velier focused on high-end spirits for fine dining, pioneered the import of New World wines from places like Chile and New Zealand, and introduced Latin American white spirits to Italy’s trendiest bars and cafés. By the early ‘90s, Velier was collaborating directly with legendary distillers on co-bottlings of single malts and rums. A move that would later redefine the collector’s market.
The rum renaissance
Luca’s greatest impact has undoubtedly been in the world of rum. In 2004, during a trip to Trinidad, he stumbled upon forgotten barrels of Caroni rum. Rather than dilute or blend them, he bottled them at full proof, unleashing a global rum phenomenon. Collectors now regard these Caroni releases as some of the most iconic ever made.
He continued to champion authentic rum with his Demerara bottlings from Guyana and later with the raw, natural rums of Clairin from Haiti. In 2012, Gargano even developed the Gargano Classification, a new system that categorizes rum based on the distillation method rather than marketing fluff. A bold and necessary move for an industry long clouded by misleading labels.
A global network of excellence
What makes Velier unique isn’t just their unmatched portfolio, it’s their deep and lasting partnerships. From Champagne Billecart-Salmon to Caribbean legends like Foursquare and Hampden Estate, Velier has built a network rooted in trust, integrity and shared passion.
They’ve even collaborated with La Maison du Whisky to form LM&V, a global distribution platform that brings Velier’s vision to the world. Today, their releases are eagerly anticipated by collectors, bartenders and connoisseurs from Tokyo to New York.
Even their headquarters tells a story: a restored 16th-century villa in Genoa, a symbol of heritage and elegance, much like the spirits Velier bottles.
